The other day I suddenly realised why I like Virtual Machines and how cool they and their technology are. I was working on our schools website, which is currently running on a Ubuntu VM and has static pages.
I was working on and experimenting with Drupal, trying to figure out how to install Drupal on this Ubuntu VM without messing up the current site and then moving the Drupal install to /var/www/ when it hit me. I didn't have to mess around with my current VM and work out an upgrade path, I could just make a new VM! This simple solution struck me like a bolt of lightening, firing off pulses in my brain and making me wonder why I had'nt thought of it sooner.
A few minutes and clicks later I had another Ubuntu Server VM setup and was well on my way to installing Drupal, safe in the knowledge I was not touching the current site and felt free to experiment with everything Druapl could offer the new school website.
The website is still in development, other things get in the way and time is short, but when it is ready I know it will just be a simple case of shutting down the old VM, changing an IP or firewall rule and the new site will be live.
(this was written in Starbucks. I will attempt to write something once a week, either here or on another site, when I stop off at my local Starbucks to get my weekly bag of whole beans.)
